Annual Local Volunteer Work

In the framework of its parent company’s initiative, Good Deeds Day, Miya offices worldwide volunteer with relevant local efforts to improve the lives of the community. Though these projects are concentrated to a particular week in March, Miya Group offices contribute to the community throughout the year, both directly through water works and indirectly through local charities.

In 2014, Miya offices volunteered in the following locally relevant frameworks:

• Miya Philippines planned a daylong event for the indigenous Aetas. The day involved seminars on organic farming and vermiculture for adults and a track & field afternoon for local children.

• Miya Colombia volunteered at a local home for the elderly with limited resources. Miya employees planned a day of fun activities for residents and purchased supplies both for the day and well beyond as a donation.

• Miya Bahamas partnered with its client, the Bahamas Water Sewage Corporation, to renovate the ‘Elizabeth Estates’ Children’s Home. Because the scope of renovations went beyond Good Deeds Day, Miya and WSC employees rotated shifts at the home throughout the week to be able to complete the renovations fully.

• Miya Israel volunteered at a local school to paint its student activity center, plant gardens throughout the grounds with students (installing a sophisticated drip irrigation system, of course, to ensure water efficiency) and conducted a seminar on water conservation and awareness in 5th grade classes.

Aligning Interests with Clients

Offering partially performance-based contracts, Miya ensures that utilities feel secure with its target-focused approach. The PB framework demonstrates to clients that Miya is focuses on achieving the goals set for a particular city according to its budget and priorities.

As elaborated by Bahamas Water and Sewerage Corporation General Manager Glen Laville to the New York Times:

“One selling point was that 30 percent of the company’s fees would be based on performance. To earn those payments, Miya would have to bring the leakage down to 2.5 million gallons per day by year five, and to 2 million gallons per day by year seven – and the levels would have to be maintained for the duration of the contract. (Reductions below that level become cost prohibitive) … Last year, with two desalination facilities running at full capacity, we had to ration water. Within nine months of starting this project, we got to a point where we no longer had to ration the water. And we’re now at a point where we can tell the desalination plant to cut back on their supply.”

Clients know that if targets are not achieved, they will not have to pay; Miya also has an incentive to over-achieve targets, which is highly beneficial to clients and their community.
